Steamer Wharf · Queenstown
Sailing times by season, the 2026 maintenance closure, and which departure to pick for sunset, snow or a quieter deck.
The TSS Earnslaw leaves Steamer Wharf in Queenstown on a two-hour grid: up to seven 90-minute sailings a day in summer, from 9am to 9pm, and three a day in deep winter, at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.
She sails every day of the year except during her annual survey, which in 2026 runs from 18 May to 26 June. While she is out of the water, the Spirit of Queenstown catamaran runs the Walter Peak trips in her place.
Below is the timetable by season, the lunch and dinner sittings to Walter Peak, and how to choose between them. Times were compiled in September 2026; the live booking calendar is the final word for your date.

Cruise-only departures follow the season. Summer has the most sailings and the longest evenings; winter drops to three midday departures.
| Period | Cruise-only departures |
|---|---|
| Peak summer (late December–February) | 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm, 7pm, 9pm |
| Early autumn (March–mid-April) | 9am to 7pm, six sailings |
| Late autumn (late April–mid-May) | 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm |
| Survey closure (18 May–26 June 2026) | No Earnslaw sailings |
| Deep winter (July–mid-September) | 11am, 1pm, 3pm |
| Spring shoulder (mid-September–late October) | 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm |
| Pre-peak (late November–late December) | 9am to 7pm, six sailings |
This seasonal pattern comes from a reseller’s published timetable, not from RealNZ directly, and individual days can differ. Treat it as a planning guide and confirm the exact departure when you book.
Every sailing is the same trip: 45 minutes across Lake Whakatipu to Walter Peak, a turn at the farm wharf, and 45 minutes back. On the cruise-only ticket you stay on board at Walter Peak.
If you want to go ashore for the Gourmet BBQ, you book a sitting rather than a cruise time.
| Sitting | Departs Queenstown | Runs |
|---|---|---|
| BBQ lunch | 11am or 1pm | All year |
| BBQ dinner | 5pm | All year |
| BBQ dinner (sunset sailing) | 7pm | About November to February |
The whole outing takes three and a half to four hours, including both crossings. The Walter Peak Gourmet BBQ runs on both the Earnslaw and the Spirit of Queenstown, so choose the option that names the steamship if she is the reason you are booking. It is the most common mistake on these listings.
The 7pm summer dinner is the one to book for the sunset on the way home; our evening cruise guide has the sunset times by month. In winter the 5pm dinner crosses and returns in darkness, so you see the homestead lit up but very little of the farm. Our lunch vs dinner guide goes through the trade-off month by month, and the dinner cruise page covers the evening itself.

Each winter the Earnslaw comes out of service for her annual survey, the inspection and overhaul that keeps a 1912 ship certified to carry passengers. In 2026 RealNZ lists the closure as 18 May to 26 June.
Other sources give 27 or 28 June as her first day back. If you are travelling in the last week of June, check the vessel named on your booking option rather than assuming.
During the closure:
Surveys can overrun. In 2025 the ship was due back on 9 September and returned on 1 October, after almost 20 weeks out of the water, the longest survey in her history. RealNZ used it to lift out her two 16-tonne engines for the first time, re-tube the boilers and fit sealed roller bearings. If a date just after a survey matters to you, keep a backup plan or book the catamaran.
Dates for 2027 have not been confirmed by RealNZ. One reseller lists 22 May to 1 July 2027; treat that as provisional.
She runs every day through winter once the survey is over, usually at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Winter is the season for snow on Cecil Peak, Walter Peak and the Remarkables, and for mulled wine from the onboard bar.
RealNZ’s temperature guide puts winter at 5–10°C, so bring a proper warm layer even on a sunny day; the open decks are colder than town. The warmest seats are on the starboard side outside the boiler room, a tip that turns up again and again in passenger reviews. The 3pm sailing catches the low afternoon light on the peaks and gets you back before dark.
Our best time to sail guide compares all four seasons in more detail.
Pick by what you want from the 90 minutes:
Whichever you choose, go down to the engine-room viewing gallery as soon as you board, before it fills up. The bow is the place for mountain photos; the stern shows the coal smoke trailing behind her.
For December to March and New Zealand school holidays, book one to two weeks ahead, and earlier for the BBQ, which is often flagged as likely to sell out because space at Walter Peak is limited by the boat. In the shoulder seasons a cruise-only seat can often be booked the day before or on the day.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure means an early booking costs you nothing if the weather or your plans change.
For prices across every option, see our TSS Earnslaw tickets and prices guide. For what the cruise itself is like, see the TSS Earnslaw cruise page, and for the ship’s story, the history of the Earnslaw. When you know your date, check availability.
The Experience
The 90-minute cruise is the same at 9am or 9pm; the light and the crowd are what change.
Four checks before you book a departure.
The Earnslaw is out for her annual survey from 18 May to 26 June 2026. If your dates fall inside it, Walter Peak trips run on the Spirit of Queenstown catamaran instead.
Late afternoon in summer, or the 3pm sailing in autumn and winter, gets the best light on the mountains. The 7pm summer dinner brings you home at sunset.
Walter Peak packages list two boats. Choose the option naming the TSS Earnslaw if the steamship is the point; the vessel cannot be swapped at the wharf.
Meet at the RealNZ Visitor Centre, 88 Beach Street. Drivers should allow another 30 minutes to park in town; there is no parking at the wharf.

"Our guide Do made the trip really enjoyable with her entertaining and knowledgable commentary. The scenery was absolutely stunning. The van was really comfy and cheese rolls were delicious. Highly recommend this tour with Altitude and Do."
"Really enjoyed the cruise . Great way to see the town and the mountains from the water"

"Excellent tourist attraction well worth doing this if you visit Queenstown"
"We did an independent trip on the Earnslaw, it was not part of a tour. We arrived at the dock and saw big queues, but once the boat got underway and people started moving about the boat didn’t seem so busy. Its a great boat which gives you a beautiful window into a bygone era of boat building quality, with beautiful wood and brass fittings. We loved the fact that the inside of the boat is hollow so you can see down into the engine room at marvel at the incredible workings of the steam engine. From above you can even watch the man shovelling coal into the furnace. We never got off at Mt Walter station (though it looked a spectacular experience, but we didnt have the time or money) . The return journey had less people,. I would highly recommentvthis trip."

"It was a lovely way to spend the morning. Since we just took the cruise round trip we thought it was expensive. Really seems to be used to get people to the other side for their adventures."

She leaves Steamer Wharf on a two-hour grid. In peak summer (late December to February) cruise-only sailings run at 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm, 7pm and 9pm. In deep winter (July to mid-September) there are three, at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Spring and late autumn sit in between with four sailings from 11am to 5pm. These times come from a reseller timetable, so confirm your date on the live calendar before you plan the rest of the day around it.
The Earnslaw is out of service for her annual survey from 18 May to 26 June 2026, according to RealNZ. Some resellers list 27 or 28 June as the first day back, so if you are travelling in the last week of June, check that the option you book names the steamship. During the closure the Spirit of Queenstown catamaran runs the Walter Peak trips in her place.
The Spirit of Queenstown, a modern catamaran, takes over the Walter Peak crossings for the BBQ, farm tour and other packages. The crossing is shorter, around 35 minutes, and there is no engine room to watch, but the farm, the buffet and the sheepdog show are the same. Our vessel comparison covers the differences in detail.
Yes. She sails daily through winter with fewer departures, usually three a day at 11am, 1pm and 3pm, except during the annual survey (18 May to 26 June in 2026). Winter brings snow on Cecil Peak and the Remarkables, temperatures around 5–10°C on the lake, and mulled wine at the onboard bar. The 3pm sailing gets the best of the low afternoon light.
BBQ lunch sittings leave at 11am and 1pm all year. Dinner leaves at 5pm all year, with an extra 7pm sailing from about November to February. The 7pm summer dinner is the one to book if you want the sunset on the way home. In winter the 5pm dinner crosses and returns in the dark. Our lunch vs dinner guide goes through it month by month.
The cruise-only trip is 90 minutes return, 45 minutes each way to Walter Peak, and you stay on board while the ship turns at the farm wharf. Walter Peak packages that let you go ashore, such as the BBQ or the farm tour, take three and a half to four hours in total.
Check in 20 minutes before departure at the RealNZ Visitor Centre, 88 Beach Street. If you are driving, add another 30 minutes to find a park, because there is no parking at the wharf. RealNZ suggests the Man Street and Church Street parking buildings; motorhomes should use the Boundary Street or Ballarat Street carparks, about a 15-minute walk away.
Rarely. She sails in rain, cloud and cold; only severe wind stops her. If a sailing is cancelled you can rebook or take a full refund. Separately, cancellation is free up to 24 hours before departure on bookings made through RealNZ or GetYourGuide, so booking early costs nothing if your plans change.
Book one to two weeks ahead for December to March and New Zealand school holidays, especially for the BBQ and farm tour, which sell out because space at Walter Peak is limited by the boat. Outside those periods a cruise-only seat can often be booked the day before or on the day.
Weekday sailings are quieter than weekends, and the first and last departures of the day tend to be less crowded than the middle of the day. If you want space in the engine-room gallery, head there as soon as you board, before the rest of the ship catches up.
Not officially. One reseller lists 22 May to 1 July 2027, but RealNZ has not confirmed it. Treat any 2027 date as provisional until the operator publishes it, and remember the 2025 survey overran badly, returning the ship on 1 October instead of 9 September.
