TSS Earnslaw Evening Cruise: Sunset, Dinner and What to Expect

Late sailings on the TSS Earnslaw run mainly in summer. When an evening crossing catches the sunset, how the 7pm Walter Peak dinner compares with a 90-minute cruise, and what winter evenings look like.

Updated October 2026

For a full evening on the TSS Earnslaw, book the Walter Peak Gourmet BBQ dinner: you cross Lake Whakatipu on the 1912 steamship, eat at the Colonel’s Homestead and sail back as the light goes. RealNZ does not sell a separate sunset cruise, so which evening you get depends on the month and the departure you pick.

Cruise only or the Walter Peak dinner?

There are two ways to spend an evening on the Earnslaw, and they differ in time more than in scenery.

Choose the 90-minute cruise if you already have a dinner booking in town and mainly want time on the ship. Choose the Walter Peak dinner if you want the whole evening planned: two crossings, a meal and the farm, with nothing to organise afterwards except the walk back from the wharf. The dinner is served ashore, not on the ship. On board you can buy drinks and snacks at the Promenade Café and bar.

The BBQ listing also runs on the Spirit of Queenstown catamaran. If the steamship is the point, pick the option that names the Earnslaw. Our vessel comparison covers the differences.

Is it a sunset cruise?

Only on some sailings, in some months. Queenstown’s sunset moves from about 9:30pm around the end of December to about 5:10pm in June, so the same departure time gives a very different evening across the year.

  • Late December to February: the 9pm cruise-only sailing is out on the lake around sunset. On the 7pm dinner, the return crossing falls around sunset or in the dusk after it in December and January; by late February the sun usually sets while you are at the homestead.
  • March to mid-April: the last cruise-only sailing leaves about 7pm, and sunset moves from roughly 8:30pm in early March to about 6:10pm by mid-April. Over those weeks the 7pm sailing goes from evening light to after dark.
  • Late April to mid-September: the last cruise-only sailing leaves at 3pm or 5pm, close to sunset, and the 5pm dinner comes back across the lake in the dark.

The sailing times come from the seasonal pattern on our TSS Earnslaw timetable, which is a planning guide and not RealNZ’s own schedule. Confirm your exact departure when you book, and check the forecast on the day: low cloud over the Remarkables can hide the sunset whichever sailing you choose.

Summer vs winter evenings

In summer the evenings are long. From late December, a 7pm or 9pm departure still has daylight for the crossing, and the outside decks are comfortable in a light jacket.

Winter evenings are darker and colder, but they have their own appeal. On the 5pm dinner you leave in the last light with snow on the ranges, see the homestead lit up at Walter Peak and come back towards the lights of Queenstown. You see very little of the farm itself, which matters if the sheepdog show and the paddocks are part of why you are going. Our lunch vs dinner guide goes through that trade-off month by month.

The ship comes out of service each winter for her annual survey; in 2026 RealNZ listed the closure as 18 May to 26 June. Walter Peak dinners in those weeks cross on the Spirit of Queenstown.

Is it good for couples?

Yes. The Earnslaw moves slowly, the saloons are panelled in wood, and the bar is open on the crossing, which makes an evening sailing an easy date in Queenstown. Adding the Walter Peak dinner turns it into an occasion, with a table at the homestead and the lake outside the windows.

Is it good for photography?

Evening light on the lake can be beautiful, but it is less predictable than daytime light. Book a daytime sailing if you want sharp detail on the mountains and the farm. Book an evening one for silhouettes, reflections on calm water and changing colour over the Remarkables. Bring a jacket for the outer decks: the ship’s speed adds a cold wind even on a summer evening.

Can you take an evening cruise without dinner?

Yes, in the warmer months. The seasonal pattern shows cruise-only sailings at 5pm from spring to autumn and at 7pm and 9pm in peak summer, from late December to February. Late sailings do not run every night of the year, so check the times for your date before you plan the evening around one. The cruise-only listing shows the departures on sale for each day.

If you only want time on the water and the ship is not the point, the Lake Wakatipu Scenic Cruise (from US$46, 4.8/5 from about 400 reviews) is a cheaper 90-minute option on a modern boat.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the cruise-only sailing?

About 90 minutes from the Queenstown wharf and back.
